Many many years ago, the upstream basin surrounded and hemmed by mountains of what is now known as part of the town Baggao, was all wilderness. According to people of olden times AETAS or NEGRITOS then inhabited the basin. All the time wild animals such as deer, wilds pigs, wild carabaos and occasional tamaraw roamed the area. The negritos then named the whole upstream.
Then at the later part of the eighteens hundreds, some adventurous souls from the Ilocos region who immigrated to penablanca decided to hunt further into the north of their usual hunting arounds. One of the hunters perhaps chasing game reached the peak of the mountain of what is now known as Quibal. He was surprised to see before him. The wild valley spreading far as the could see. He then called his companions and showed then the wonderful site that captivated the hunter. Naturally one of those days hunters ventured into the center of the valley and found a beautiful source of water which is now the confluence of the Puray and Paranan rivers. So one thing led to another and news spread among the Ilocano immigrants or the presence of this pristine paradise. It was the families of the late Antonio luis, Pedro tumaneng, Pedro miiguel and later the family Salvador all from the Ilocos Region decided to venture into basin congregating.
As this scenario was one day. So many many years ago in the down stream area of this basin, three Spaniards from the town of Amulung and alcala decided to hunt on what area. Thye bag some deer and come across the beautiful lake where they skinned and can cussed of their catch. Wwhen they saw some natives in the area , they asked what was the name of the place. One of the natives told them they called “ABBAGGAOAN” meaning a place to wash. Maybe as time went to some wiser men decided to call the place Baggao. Since then the name Baggao was never changed.
Then the Spaniards sent a missionary by the name of FRAY PEDRO VICANDI to convert the natives into Christianity. A royal decree from King Philip of spain some time in 1896, created the municipality of Baggao separating it from the mother town which was the Amulung. As this way happening more immigrsnts immigrated into the center of what ws then called Battukit. Then it come to pass that Hierarchy of the roman catholic church sent Reverent father Isaac Albano to evangelize the inhabitants of this place Battukit. Rev. fr. Albano and the council of elders together claim that from that council, they created a bamboo pole and the first bird to alight at the top of the pole would gives the place its name. it is said that the first bird to alight on the top of the pole is a Maya bird.
Since the color of the plumage of the bird is similar to the color of the garments of saint joseph, it was then decided to name the place san Jose. And the old people claim that’s how san jose got its legendary name. the first catholic chapel was then created on the western part of san Jose some time in 1935. Then later it was transferred to its present location now.
